Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is the most complete edition of the 2022 generation. It differs from the Standard edition on one decisive point: the right to run an unlimited number of Hyper-V virtual machines and Windows containers on a properly licensed server. It is the edition for data centres, hosting providers and heavily virtualised infrastructures.

Standard or Datacenter: how to decide

The rule is simple and purely economic. The Windows Server 2022 Standard edition grants two virtual machines per licence, and you can stack several Standard licences on the same server to get more. From roughly a dozen VMs, stacking Standard licences costs more than a single Datacenter licence: that is the tipping point.

Datacenter also brings features missing from Standard: software-defined networking (SDN), full Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica with no partnership limit, and unlimited shielded virtual machines. If you host customer workloads or are building a hyperconverged cluster, Datacenter is not an option but a prerequisite.

Licensing model: per core, plus CALs

Windows Server 2022 is licensed per physical core, with a minimum of 16 cores per server and 8 cores per processor. A dual-processor server with 12 cores each, i.e. 24 cores, therefore needs 24 cores of coverage.

A point often overlooked at purchase: the server licence does not cover access. Every user or device that connects to the server must have a client access licence (CAL).
