Windows Server 2019 Datacenter — unlimited virtualisation

Windows Server 2019 Datacenter is built for heavily virtualised infrastructures. What sets it apart from the Standard edition is one decisive right: an unlimited number of Hyper-V virtual machines and containers on a properly licensed server, whereas Standard allows two per licence.

When Datacenter becomes the better deal

The calculation is pure arithmetic. Each Windows Server 2019 Standard licence grants two VMs, and licences can be stacked on the same server. As long as you stay below around ten virtual machines, stacking Standard licences costs less. Beyond that, a single Datacenter licence wins — and you no longer need to recount your rights every time you add a VM.

On top of that come features reserved for Datacenter: full Storage Spaces Direct for hyperconverged clusters, unlimited Storage Replica, software-defined networking and unlimited shielded virtual machines. For a hosting provider or a cluster, these are not options but prerequisites.

Per-core licensing and CALs

The model is identical to the Standard edition: licensing per physical core, with a minimum of 16 cores per server and 8 cores per processor. Count physical cores, not logical threads.

Every user or device accessing the server requires a CAL, including with Datacenter. For Remote Desktop access, add a Windows Server 2019 RDS CAL. All our access licences are grouped in the Windows Server and CAL collection.

2019 or 2022 Datacenter

Windows Server 2019 is supported until 9 January 2029. Windows Server 2022 Datacenter is supported until 14 October 2031 and adds Secured-core server as well as SMB over QUIC. For a new infrastructure, the longer support period generally justifies 2022; to extend an estate already on 2019, consistency comes first.

Is virtualisation really unlimited?

Yes, within what your hardware can support. The number of VMs is not capped by the licence.

Are CALs required?

Yes, just as with the Standard edition. The server licence never covers client access.

Can I move from Standard to Datacenter without reinstalling?

Yes. An in-place edition upgrade is possible with the DISM /online /Set-Edition command and a valid Datacenter key.

Is the licence key genuine?

Yes. It activates directly with Microsoft's servers, with no third-party software, and is replaced free of charge if activation fails.
