What is a MAK key and how does it work?

MAK stands for Multiple Activation Key. It is one of the two volume activation methods Microsoft provides as part of its volume licensing programme, the other being KMS (Key Management Service).

With a MAK key, each device is activated individually, directly with Microsoft's activation servers over the internet, or offline by phone. Each activation uses one "credit" on the key. When you buy a 50-PC MAK key, it can activate up to 50 separate Windows 11 Pro installations.

Unlike KMS, a MAK key does not require you to set up an internal KMS server. It is therefore particularly well suited to organisations without a complex Active Directory infrastructure, or that need to activate standalone devices (for example, laptops used outside the corporate network).

MAK activations are permanent: once a device is activated, it stays activated indefinitely, even if it changes network or leaves the domain. Only a major hardware change (such as replacing the motherboard) may require reactivation.

If a laptop is lost or stolen, its data is completely unreadable without the recovery key, which is stored securely in Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) or on a dedicated recovery server. BitLocker can be deployed and monitored centrally with Microsoft Intune.

Hyper-V, Microsoft's hypervisor built into Windows 11 Pro, lets you create and run virtual machines directly on workstations. How to deploy a Windows 11 Pro MAK key

A MAK key can be deployed in several ways depending on the size of your fleet and your existing infrastructure:

Manual activation on each device:

1. Go to Settings → System → Activation.
2. Click Change product key and enter the MAK key.
3. Windows checks the key with Microsoft's servers and confirms activation. One activation credit is used.

Command-line activation (for automated deployments):

1. Open a Command Prompt as administrator.
2. Enter the command: slmgr.vbs /ipk YOUR-MAK-KEY
3. Then: slmgr.vbs /ato to activate online.
4. Check the status with: slmgr.vbs /dlv

Deployment with Microsoft Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM): for large organisations, the MAK key can be built into an SCCM deployment package or into a WIM system image captured with DISM or MDT, so that each device activates automatically during installation.

Offline activation: if some devices have no direct internet access, offline activation is possible through Microsoft's phone activation process or through proxy activation with VAMT (Volume Activation Management Tool).

Important information about the MAK licence

The MAK key supplied by Yeslicense is a genuine multiple activation key. The number of activations shown is the number of devices you can activate with the key. Activations are permanent: they do not need renewing and remain valid as long as the hardware does not change significantly.
