Windows 10 Activation Errors: Common Codes and Fixes

Erreur activation Windows 10 : codes 0xC004F074, 0x803FA067 et solutions

A Windows 10 activation error almost always comes down to one of four causes: the key doesn't match the installed edition (Home instead of Pro, for example), the key is already in use or blocked, it is a volume key expecting a corporate KMS server, or the PC's hardware has changed. The code shown in Settings > Update & Security > Activation tells you which. Note it down, run the troubleshooter from the same page, then check the installed licence with slmgr /dlv.

Below are the codes we actually see in support, what they mean and the fix that works, along with the slmgr commands you need to know.

How do you see the activation status and the exact error code?

Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. The "Activation" line shows either "Windows is activated with a digital licence" or an error message followed by a code such as 0xC004F074. That code is the most useful piece of information: without it, there's no way to know whether you need to change the key, wait or reactivate.

To go further, open a Command Prompt as administrator (right-click Start > Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)) and use these commands:

Command What it shows or does
slmgr /xpr Shows whether Windows is permanently activated
slmgr /dli Edition, key type and last 5 characters of the installed key
slmgr /dlv Full details: channel (Retail, OEM, Volume:MAK, Volume:GVLK), licence status
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX Installs a new product key
slmgr /ato Starts online activation immediately
slmgr /upk then slmgr /cpky Uninstalls the current key and clears it from the registry

The "Description" line of slmgr /dlv is often telling: if it contains VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel, Windows is waiting for a corporate KMS server, which is a sure explanation for a 0xC004F074 error on a personal PC. All the options are documented in the Microsoft Learn article on Slmgr.vbs options.

Errors 0xC004F074 and 0x8007007B: Windows is looking for a KMS server

These two codes mean the same thing: Windows was installed or activated with a KMS-type volume licence key (or an Enterprise key), and it is trying to reach a Key Management Service server that doesn't exist on your network. On a company PC, simply reconnecting to the corporate network or VPN is often enough. On a personal PC, the cause is almost always one of the following:

  • the PC was bought second-hand after being retired from a corporate fleet;
  • an Enterprise or Education edition was installed by mistake;
  • an unofficial KMS "activator" was used and then stopped working.

That last case is the most frequent in our tickets. These tools are illegal, sometimes disable your antivirus and modify system services: we don't recommend them in any form. The clean fix is to uninstall the current key and install a legitimate one:

  1. Open a Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Type slmgr /upk then slmgr /cpky to remove the current key.
  3. Install your key with slmgr /ipk followed by the 25 characters (hyphens included).
  4. Run slmgr /ato and wait for the "Product activated successfully" message.
  5. Check with slmgr /xpr.

If the installed edition is Enterprise or Education, a Home or Pro key won't be accepted (error 0xC004F034 or 0xC004F050): you then need to reinstall the correct edition. Our guide to creating a Windows 10 installation USB explains how to prepare the media.

Error 0x803FA067: the Home to Pro upgrade gets stuck

This code mostly appears when you change edition: the PC has moved to Windows 10 Pro (sometimes with a generic upgrade key, which activates nothing), but no valid Pro licence is associated with the device. Windows then says it can't be activated because you don't have a valid digital licence or product key.

The fix is to enter a genuine Windows 10 Pro product key in Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change product key. If the wizard rejects the key while the PC is still on Home, here is a trick we often use in support: disconnect the PC from the internet (Wi-Fi and cable), enter the Pro key, let the edition upgrade finish and restart, then reconnect and click Activate. The full procedure is described in our article on upgrading Windows 10 Home to Pro without reinstalling.

Errors 0xC004C003 and 0xC004C008: the key is rejected

0xC004C003 means the activation server has blocked the key. It may have been reported, revoked or misused on many PCs: we see this very often with keys found on "free" lists or bought on marketplaces with no guarantee. There is no workaround: you need a valid key. If you bought the key from a seller, contact their support with a screenshot of the activation screen.

0xC004C008 indicates the key has already been activated on another device. If you are simply reinstalling the same PC, you can try the offline activation option: press Win + R and type slui 4. Since early 2026, Microsoft has replaced the old automated phone line with an online process: the window shows a link or QR code to open on a smartphone to get the confirmation ID. If that doesn't work, contact the key seller's support with a screenshot of the error code. If the key really is installed on another machine, you need one licence per device.

Steps to diagnose and fix a Windows 10 activation error
Five steps that solve the vast majority of activation errors.

MAK volume licences: errors specific to MAK keys

MAK (Multiple Activation Key) keys activate online with Microsoft, without a KMS server, for a set number of activations. They suit businesses and technicians who manage several machines, like our Windows 10 Professional MAK (volume) licence. Two things to know:

  • A MAK key must be installed on the Professional edition; it is rejected on Home.
  • If the PC had a generic KMS key, MAK activation fails with 0xC004F074 until you run slmgr /ipk with the MAK key, then slmgr /ato.

The code 0xC004C020 means the MAK key's activation count has been used up: it's up to the key supplier to step in.

Errors after a hardware change: 0x803F7001 and 0xC004F213

The Windows 10 digital licence is tied to the PC's hardware, particularly the motherboard. After a motherboard replacement, Windows may no longer recognise the device and display 0x803F7001 or 0xC004F213. If your digital licence was linked to your Microsoft account before the failure, open Activation > Troubleshoot, choose "I changed hardware on this device recently" and select the PC concerned. Microsoft explains the process in its article on reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

An OEM licence pre-installed by the manufacturer, however, stays tied to the original motherboard: after an out-of-warranty replacement, a new licence is usually needed. Simply changing a drive, memory or graphics card normally causes no problem.

Does Windows 10 still activate after end of support?

Yes. End of support on 14 October 2025 concerns security updates, not activation; home users can also extend fixes until 12 October 2027 with the ESU programme (free in the European Economic Area with a Microsoft account, otherwise as a one-off purchase, on Windows 10 22H2). A valid Windows 10 Home or Pro key still activates normally online, and all Windows features remain available. So if an error code appears today, it has a specific cause among those described above, not a reason linked to the timeline.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if Windows 10 isn't activated?

Windows keeps working, but an "Activate Windows" watermark appears and personalisation options (wallpaper, colours, lock screen) are greyed out. There's no hard lockout, but using it without a licence does not comply with Microsoft's licence terms.

How long should you wait before trying activation again?

If the error mentions busy servers, try again a few hours later. For key-related codes (0xC004C003, 0xC004F050, 0x803FA067), waiting changes nothing: you need to fix the key or the edition.

Can a Windows 11 key activate Windows 10?

In practice, yes: a Windows 11 Home or Pro key generally activates the equivalent Windows 10 edition. The reverse also works. The edition must match, though (Pro with Pro).

How do I find the key installed on my PC?

slmgr /dli shows the last 5 characters of the current key, enough to compare it with the one you received. The full key can't be read in plain text in Windows: always keep your delivery email.

Does phone activation still exist?

Not in its voice form. Since early 2026, the option launched by slui 4 shows a link or QR code to open on a smartphone to get the confirmation ID online. It can help after reinstalling the same PC; if it fails, the key seller's support is the right contact.

Need a valid licence?

If your diagnosis shows the current key is generic, blocked or meant for another edition, a legitimate licence fixes the problem in minutes. We offer Windows 10 Home licence keys and Windows 10 Professional licence keys delivered by email with activation instructions, and our support team helps you interpret the error code if activation won't go through.
