When Office 2024 refuses to activate, the cause almost always comes down to one of three things: another version of Office still present on the PC, a licence key entered in the wrong place for its type, or a network block (clock, proxy, firewall). Check them in that order before concluding the key is at fault: in our support experience, it rarely is.
Where should you start when activation fails?
- Look for duplicate installations. In Settings > Apps, uninstall anything called “Microsoft 365”, “Office” or “OneNote” in another version. New PCs ship with a pre-installed Microsoft 365 trial: as long as it is there, it is the one asking for a subscription, not your Office 2024.
- Check the date and time. A difference of a few minutes is enough to break the secure connection to the activation servers.
- Turn off your VPN and proxy during activation.
- Relaunch Word as administrator (right-click > Run as administrator), then File > Account > Activate Product.
Is your key entered online or in the application?
This is the most common mix-up. There are two families of Office 2024 product keys, and each has its own route:

The delivery email states the method intended for your key and the matching installation link. Always use that link: an installer obtained elsewhere may be for a different edition, and a Professional Plus key will not activate a Home or Standard edition. How do you check and repair the licence from the command line?
Office installs a script, ospp.vbs, that shows exactly what it has stored. Open a Command Prompt as administrator:

The typical case: /dstatus reveals two licences, one of them in a grace period left by a trial. Office then shows the status of the wrong one. Removing it with /unpkey solves the problem without reinstalling.
How do you cleanly uninstall an older version of Office?
A standard uninstall sometimes leaves licences and services behind. If activation still fails after going through Settings > Apps, use the Office uninstall tool offered by Microsoft Support, which also removes leftovers, restart, then reinstall Office 2024 from the link in your email. Two rules avoid most problems: one version of Office per PC, and the same architecture (64-bit preferably) for Office, Visio and Project if they are installed together.
When should you contact the seller?
Once you have checked for duplicates, the installed edition and the network, if the server still rejects the key (codes 0xC004C060, 0xC004C003 or 0xC004C008). Send your order number, a screenshot of the message and the output of ospp.vbs /dstatus: with these three items, the diagnosis is immediate. A connection is required at the moment of activation. For an offline PC, volume editions accept phone activation: the wizard provides an installation ID to give to Microsoft's automated phone system.

For keys redeemed on setup.office.com, yes: the licence is tied to the account, which makes reinstalling easier. For keys entered in the application, no.
Can I reinstall Office 2024 after formatting the PC?
