Your Office 2021 product key is in the delivery email or the invoice you received when you bought it. If it was linked to a Microsoft account, you often no longer need it: just sign in to that account to reinstall and reactivate Office. From the PC itself, Office only shows the last 5 characters of the key, via the ospp.vbs /dstatus command: useful for identifying a key, but not for recovering it in full.
Below: where to look depending on how you bought it, how to read the installed key, how to change it cleanly and how to fix the activation errors we see most often in support.
What does an Office 2021 product key look like?
An Office product key has 25 characters split into five groups of five, separated by hyphens: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. It uses only a limited set of characters (letters B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, M, P, Q, R, T, V, W, X, Y and digits 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9). The practical consequence: there is no letter O or digit 0, no I or 1, no S or 5. If you read a “0” on a label or a blurry screenshot, it must be something else.
Do not confuse the key with other identifiers: the order number, the Product ID shown by Windows (format 00000-00000-00000-AAAAA) or the installation ID shown by the Activation Wizard are not product keys.
How do you find your Office 2021 product key?
Where to look depends on where you bought the licence and how it was activated.

For a key bought online, search your inbox for the order sender or words such as “key”, “licence” or “Office 2021”, and do not forget your Junk folder. At Yeslicense, the key is sent by email after payment: if you can no longer find that message, write to our support team with your order number and we will resend it.
Be wary of “key finder” utilities that promise to extract the key from the registry. With Office 2021 Click-to-Run, the full key is not stored in a readable form: these tools show at best a partial or generic key, which is no use for reactivating.
Viewing the last 5 characters with ospp.vbs
When several keys are in circulation in a business or a household, knowing which one is installed on which PC avoids many mistakes. The ospp.vbs script, shipped with Office, gives you that information:
- Type cmd in Windows search, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Go to the Office folder:
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16". For 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, useC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16; depending on the installation, the script may also be in aroot\Office16subfolder. - Run
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. - Read the lines LICENSE NAME (installed edition), LICENSE STATUS (
---LICENSED---if Office is activated) and Last 5 characters of installed product key.
The script's options are documented by Microsoft on the page Tools to manage volume activation of Office. If the command returns “No installed product keys detected”, no key is installed: Office is either not activated or activated through a Microsoft 365 account.
How do you change the Office 2021 product key?
Changing the key is useful if you are moving from a trial licence or a rejected key to a valid licence, or if a PC was activated by mistake with another PC's key. There are two methods.
From the Office interface
Open Word and go to File > Account. Under Product Information, use the Change License link when it is offered, then choose to enter a product key and type the new key. If that link does not appear, use the command-line method below, which works in every case.
With ospp.vbs (reliable method)
- In the administrator Command Prompt, in the Office16 folder, note the last 5 characters with
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. - Remove the old key:
cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:ABCDE(replace ABCDE with the 5 characters you noted). - Install the new one:
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. - Activate:
cscript ospp.vbs /act. The messageProduct activation successfulconfirms it worked.
Note: the new key must match the installed edition. A Professional Plus key will not install on Office Home & Business, and a volume licence key is not suitable for a retail installation. How do you activate Office 2021 with your product key?
For a first installation, Microsoft says to enter the key at office.com/setup while signed in to a Microsoft account, which links the licence to that account (see Where to enter your Office product key). For Professional Plus keys that activate directly in the application, open Word after installation: the activation window asks for the key, you paste it in, and online activation completes in a few seconds.

Microsoft has replaced the old automated phone activation with an online process: depending on the case, the “phone” option shows a link or QR code to open on a smartphone, which provides the confirmation ID to enter in Office. If that is not enough, contact the seller's support with your order number.
Common Office 2021 product key errors
Here are the messages we deal with most often in support, with the usual cause:
- “This product key doesn't work with this version of Office”: the installed edition does not match the key (for example Microsoft 365 or Home & Student installed instead of Professional Plus). Check the product name in File > Account.
- 0xC004F050 (invalid key): a typo, a misread character, or an Office 2019/2024 key entered on Office 2021. Copy and paste the key from the email rather than retyping it.
- 0xC004C008 (key already used the maximum number of times): try the Activation Wizard's fallback option (link or QR code on a smartphone), otherwise contact the seller's support with your order number.
- “Unlicensed Product” or a red banner after activation: two versions of Office are often installed side by side on the PC. Uninstall the pre-installed version (Microsoft 365, often present on new PCs), restart and run activation again.
- Activation spins endlessly: check Windows' date and time, temporarily turn off your VPN or proxy and try again.
A useful reminder: keys handed out for free on forums or in PDF files, along with unofficial activators, are neither legal nor safe. They end up blocked, and the associated tools regularly contain malware.

Can you display the full Office 2021 key from the PC?
No. Office only stores and displays the last 5 characters, visible with cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. The full key is in your order email or on your invoice.
Does my Office 2021 key work on Mac?
No. Windows and Mac keys are separate. For a Mac you need a dedicated licence such as Office 2021 Home & Business for Mac, which activates with your Microsoft account.
Can an Office 2021 key activate Office 2024?
No. Each key is specific to one version and one edition. An Office 2021 key only activates Office 2021 of the same edition.
What if I have lost my key and it is not linked to an account?
Contact the seller with your order number or proof of purchase. Without these, there is no reliable way to recover the full key.
Is my key still valid now that Office 2021 support has ended?
Yes. Since 13 October 2026, Office 2021 keeps working and the key still activates it; only the security updates have stopped.
