A “free Office 2021 key” that actually works and is legal does not exist: Microsoft does not give away Office 2021 product keys to the general public, and the lists, PDFs and “activators” circulating online are either keys that have already been blocked, generic keys that cannot be used, or pirated programs. The free, legal options are Office on the web (Word, Excel and PowerPoint in your browser with a Microsoft account) and LibreOffice. If you need the full desktop applications, the lasting solution is a genuine perpetual licence, paid for once.
Every week our support team sees customers arrive after a bad experience: Office showing “Unlicensed Product” after a few days, antivirus switched off by an activator, or even a compromised bank account. Here is what lies behind these offers and how to get set up properly.
Is there a free, legal Office 2021 licence key?
No. Office 2021 is a product sold under licence: every valid product key corresponds to a purchased licence, whether bought in a shop, on a card (the “Product Key Card” format) or digitally. Microsoft does not run any free distribution of Office 2021 keys for home users, nor is there a trial version of Office 2021 (the free trials Microsoft offers are for the Microsoft 365 subscription, not the perpetual version).
There are, however, situations where you already have a right to Office without realising it:
-
Licence bought with your PC: some computers were sold with Office Home & Student. The licence is then linked to your Microsoft account; you will find it under
account.microsoft.com> Services & subscriptions. - Licence provided by your employer or school: many universities and companies give access to Microsoft 365 with your work or student email address.
-
Key already bought but lost: before looking for a “free” key, check your account and your emails. Our guide to finding, changing and activating your Office 2021 product key explains where to look, including the last 5 characters visible with
ospp.vbs.
The same principle applies to Windows: we also explain it in our article on free Windows 11 Pro keys, what is legal and what is not.
What are “free Office 2021” key lists and PDFs really?
When we analyse the keys customers send us after a failed activation, they almost always fall into the same categories:
| What you find | What it really is | Result on activation |
|---|---|---|
| Generic “KMS” keys (GVLK) | Public keys intended for organisations that run their own activation server | No activation without a KMS server: an error such as 0xC004F074
|
| Leaked MAK keys | A company's volume keys, published without permission | Quickly blocked by Microsoft: error 0xC004C060 (key blocked) |
| “100% tested” keys in a PDF | Copy-pasted old lists or made-up keys | “This product key is not valid” |
| .exe or .zip files “with the key” | Activators, often bundled with malware | Illegal activation and a compromised computer |
Even when a key seems to “work” at first, the activation can be revoked later. Office then drops back to “Unlicensed Product” mode: a red banner and most editing features disabled, at the worst possible moment, usually the night before a deadline.
As for sites promising a key after a “survey” or a “premium” download, they mainly exist to harvest email addresses and phone numbers or to push premium-rate SMS subscriptions.
What are the real risks of activators and cracks?
Activators (KMS, cracks, “loaders”) are not harmless tools. To make Office believe it is activated, they modify system components, add scheduled tasks, sometimes tamper with the hosts file and almost always ask you to switch off your antivirus or add exclusions in Microsoft Defender. That is exactly what makes them an ideal vehicle for:
- credential stealers (“infostealers”) that grab passwords saved in your browser, session cookies and crypto wallets;
- ransomware, which encrypts your documents and demands payment;
- cryptocurrency miners, which explain a PC that is suddenly slow and noisy;
- backdoors that give the attacker remote access.
Microsoft Defender in fact detects most of these tools as a “HackTool” or potentially unwanted application. If a tutorial starts with “turn off your antivirus”, that is your cue to close the page.
Legally, using or distributing an unlicensed copy of software is copyright infringement in the UK and across Europe, and can lead to damages claims and, in serious cases, criminal penalties. For a business, charity or sole trader, the risk is commercial too: a licence audit or a security incident on a non-compliant computer costs far more than a licence. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre also regularly warns that pirated software is one of the main entry points for attacks.

How can you tell whether your Office is legally activated?
If you have doubts about an existing installation (second-hand PC, set up by someone else), three checks are enough:
- Open Word, then File > Account. Under “Product Information” you should see “Product Activated” followed by the exact edition name, for example “Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021”.
- Open a Command Prompt as administrator and go to the Office folder:
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16", then runcscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. Look at the “LICENSE NAME” and “LICENSE STATUS” lines. - If the licence shows a “KMS” channel even though you are a home user with no company server, an activator has been used.
In that case, the cleanest approach is to uninstall Office from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, run a full scan with Microsoft Defender (Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan), delete any suspicious scheduled tasks, and then reinstall with a valid licence. If the activator asked you to disable protection, also change your important passwords from another device.
What free, legal alternatives are there to Office 2021?
Office on the web (free with a Microsoft account)
Microsoft offers Word, Excel and PowerPoint online free of charge, usable in your browser with just a Microsoft account and 5 GB of OneDrive storage. Files stay in .docx, .xlsx and .pptx format, layouts are faithful, and co-editing works very well.
Limitations to be aware of: you need an internet connection, VBA macros do not run, several advanced Excel features (some analysis tools, Power Pivot) are unavailable, and Access and Publisher have no web version. For everyday use (letters, CVs, simple spreadsheets), it is often enough.
LibreOffice (free and open-source software)
LibreOffice is a free, open-source office suite installed locally: Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw, Base and Math. It opens and saves Office formats, works offline and is perfectly suited to personal use.
In our experience, problems appear with complex documents exchanged with Office users: layouts with lots of images or text boxes, elaborate pivot tables, VBA macros (LibreOffice uses its own macro language). If you work with clients or public bodies who send complex Office files, expect to make some adjustments.
A Microsoft 365 subscription
It is not free, but it is Microsoft's own alternative, often offered with a trial period. If you are torn between paying every year or just once, our comparison Office 2021 or Microsoft 365 explains both models in detail.
Is a perpetual licence the most economical solution over time?
If you want the full desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and, depending on the edition, Access and Publisher) without a subscription, a perpetual licence is the simplest choice: you pay once, activation on the PC is permanent, and no activator runs in the background.
| Solution | Cost | Desktop apps | Offline | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “Free” key / activator | Free on the surface | Yes, while it lasts | Yes | High (security and legal) |
| Office on the web | Free | No (browser) | No | None |
| LibreOffice | Free | Yes (different suite) | Yes | None, partial compatibility |
| Microsoft 365 | Subscription | Yes, always up to date | Yes, periodic connection | None |
| Office 2021 / 2024 perpetual | One-off purchase | Yes | Yes | None |
A useful point about Office 2021: Microsoft support for it ended on 13 October 2026, as shown on the Office 2021 lifecycle page. The software keeps working normally after that date; it simply no longer receives new security updates. We explain what this means in practice in our article on the end of support for Office 2021. If you are setting up a new installation for several years, Office 2024 is the forward-looking option, with support scheduled until October 2029.

How do you recognise a trustworthy licence offer?
Not all low-cost keys are equal. A few simple checks:
- the edition is clearly named (Office 2021 Professional Plus, Home & Student…) along with the number of PCs covered;
- the seller states whether it is a key to enter directly or a licence linked to a Microsoft account;
- an official download link and activation instructions are provided;
- reachable support responds if there is an activation error, with a replacement if the key does not activate;
- no “activator” .exe file is sent with the order.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Office 2021 key found on YouTube work?
In virtually every case, no. These keys are already used, blocked or generic (KMS). The rare ones that do activate are misused volume keys that end up being revoked.
Can Microsoft deactivate Office activated with a crack?
A key blocked by Microsoft can send Office back to “Unlicensed Product”. With an activator, the real danger is above all what the program installs on your PC.
Is Office on the web really free?
Yes. Word, Excel and PowerPoint online are free with a Microsoft account, with no time limit and 5 GB of OneDrive storage.
Can LibreOffice be used for business?
Yes, its open-source licence allows it. Just check compatibility with your clients' and partners' files, especially if they use macros or complex layouts.
Does Office 2021 still work after 13 October 2026?
Yes. End of support stops the updates, not the software: an activated licence remains valid and the applications continue to open normally.
Get set up without the risk
If the free versions are not enough, a genuine perpetual licence avoids both nasty activation surprises and security risks. You can choose Office 2021 Professional Plus for 1 PC if you already know this version, or Office 2024 Professional Plus for Windows for an installation planned to last several years. Our support team will help you with installation and activation.
