Windows 10 Home: How to Download, Install and Activate

Installer Windows 10 Famille : téléchargement, installation et activation de la licence

To install Windows 10 Home, download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's website, prepare a USB stick of at least 8 GB, boot the PC from it and choose the “Windows 10 Home” edition during installation. You then activate it with your product key in Settings > Update & Security > Activation, or automatically if the PC already has a digital licence or an OEM key.

This guide follows the procedure as we have customers apply it at support, including the classic pitfalls: wrong edition installed, key rejected, Microsoft account forced at first start-up.

Can you still install Windows 10 Home in 2026?

Yes. Standard support for Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025, but Microsoft still offers the official download of version 22H2, the last version of Windows 10, and activation works normally. On the security side, the Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme for consumers has been extended until 12 October 2027. In the European Economic Area, enrolment is free as long as you use Windows with a Microsoft account; it covers the Home and Pro editions on version 22H2.

Windows 10 Home therefore remains a reasonable choice for a PC that doesn't meet Windows 11's requirements (TPM 2.0, recent processor) or for a family computer whose software runs perfectly well on Windows 10. If your machine is Windows 11-compatible, also read our guide moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 before you start.

What do you need before installing Windows 10 Home?

Get these ready before you start, so you don't have to interrupt the installation halfway through:

  • a USB stick of at least 8 GB, which will be completely erased;
  • another Windows PC or the PC itself, with an internet connection, to create the media;
  • your Windows 10 Home product key (25 characters), unless the PC was already activated with Windows 10 Home: the digital licence will then be picked up automatically;
  • a backup of your data on an external drive or in the cloud: a clean installation erases the system partition;
  • the manufacturer's network drivers (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) on a second USB stick, useful on very recent or very old PCs.

Windows 10 minimum requirements, to compare with your hardware:

Component Windows 10 minimum Recommended in practice
Processor 1 GHz Dual-core or better
RAM 1 GB (32-bit) / 2 GB (64-bit) 4 GB, ideally 8 GB
Storage 32 GB 128 GB SSD or larger
Graphics card DirectX 9, WDDM 1.0 driver Up-to-date manufacturer driver
Display 800 x 600 1366 x 768 or higher

Choose the 64-bit version whenever the PC has 4 GB of RAM or more: the 32-bit version can only use around 4 GB of memory and is increasingly rare among software publishers.

How do you download Windows 10 Home for free and legally?

The download is free and official; it is the licence (the key) that you pay for. There is no separate “Home” ISO: the same media contains Home and Pro, and the edition is determined by the key or by your choice during installation.

  1. Go to Microsoft's Download Windows 10 page and click Download Now in the “Create Windows 10 installation media” section.
  2. Run MediaCreationTool22H2.exe (the name may vary slightly) and accept the licence terms.
  3. Select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.
  4. Untick “Use the recommended options for this PC” if needed, then choose your language (for example English (United Kingdom)), the Windows 10 edition and the 64-bit (x64) architecture.
  5. Choose USB flash drive, select your stick, then wait while the files download (around 4 to 5 GB) and the media is created.

The same media lets you install either Windows 10 Home or Pro.

If you prefer an ISO file (for a virtual machine or a DVD burner), choose “ISO file” in step 5. The tool also offers “Upgrade this PC now”, which is useful for repairing an existing Windows 10 while keeping files and apps.

How do you install Windows 10 Home from the USB stick?

  1. Plug the stick into the PC to be installed and restart it. Press the boot menu key: F12, F11, F9, F8 or Esc depending on the manufacturer (it is often shown briefly at start-up).
  2. Choose the UEFI entry for your USB stick.
  3. On the first screen, check the language, the time and currency format (for example “English (United Kingdom)”) and the keyboard layout, then click Next > Install now.
  4. On the “Activate Windows” screen, enter your Windows 10 Home key. No key to hand, or PC previously activated? Click I don't have a product key.
  5. If the installer asks, select Windows 10 Home from the list of editions. Don't choose Pro “to see what happens”: your Home key will not activate it.
  6. Accept the licence, then choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
  7. For a clean installation, delete the old system partitions on the main drive (never those on a data drive), select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows creates the partitions it needs by itself.

Good to know: if the PC was sold with Windows 10 Home, the OEM key is stored in the firmware (UEFI). The installer reads it automatically and installs Home without asking. To display it, type in PowerShell: (Get-CimInstance -ClassName SoftwareLicensingService).OA3xOriginalProductKey.

Microsoft account or local account during initial setup?

After the restarts, Windows launches setup (region, keyboard layout, network). When connected to the internet, Windows 10 Home pushes you to sign in with a Microsoft account first. Our advice:

  • Microsoft account: recommended if you want free ESU updates in the EEA, to link the digital licence to your account (handy if you change hardware) and to back up the device's BitLocker recovery key.
  • Local account: if you don't plug in the network cable during installation, Windows 10 offers “I don't have internet” and then “Continue with limited setup”. You can link a Microsoft account later in Settings > Accounts.

On the privacy settings screen, turn off anything you don't use (tailored advertising, optional diagnostic data). These choices can still be changed in Settings > Privacy.

How do you activate Windows 10 Home?

If you entered your key during installation, activation happens by itself as soon as the PC is online. Otherwise:

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. Click Change product key and confirm the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter the Windows 10 Home key, then Next > Activate.
  4. The message “Windows is activated” confirms it worked.

Activation is done in Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

From the command line (Command Prompt as administrator), you can do the same with slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX followed by slmgr /ato. The slmgr /xpr command confirms permanent activation. On a PC without internet, slui 4 opens offline activation: since Microsoft replaced the automated phone line, the wizard usually displays a link or QR code to open on a smartphone to get the confirmation ID to enter.

Next, run Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) until there is nothing left to install, then install the manufacturer's drivers for the graphics card and chipset.

Which activation errors occur on Windows 10 Home?

Here are the ones that come up most often after an installation. The full list is on Microsoft's Get help with Windows activation errors page.

Code or message Likely cause Solution
0xC004F212 Home key while Pro (or Home N) is installed Reinstall the right edition or use a matching key
0xC004C003 Key already used or blocked Contact the seller for a replacement
0xC004F050 Key mistyped or servers busy Check what you typed, try again later
0x803F7001 No licence found for this PC (after a hardware change) Enter a key or run the activation troubleshooter
“The selected disk is of the GPT/MBR partition style” USB stick booted in the wrong mode (UEFI or legacy) Restart using the stick's UEFI entry, or delete the partitions

The most frequent case at support is still the edition mistake: someone installs Pro “by default” and then tries to activate with a Home key. Check the edition with winver before doing anything else. Conversely, if you eventually want the Pro features, there's no need to reinstall: follow our guide to upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro with just a key.

And a reminder: activators and “free” keys circulating online are illegal and often booby-trapped. A legitimate key costs less than reinstalling after an infection.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Windows 10 Home download free?

Yes, the installation media is free on Microsoft's website. To use an activated Windows 10 Home without personalisation restrictions, you need a valid licence.

Can I install Windows 10 Home without a product key?

Yes, using “I don't have a product key”. If the PC already had a Home digital licence, it activates by itself once connected. Otherwise, Windows stays unactivated until you enter a key.

Home is enough for personal use. Pro adds BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting and advanced management. Our comparison Windows 10 Home vs Pro details the differences.

How long does the installation take?

Allow 20 to 40 minutes on an SSD, longer on a mechanical hard drive, plus the time for updates after first sign-in.

Does my Windows 10 Home licence work on Windows 11?

An activated, compatible Windows 10 Home PC can upgrade free of charge to Windows 11 Home via Windows Update, keeping its digital licence.
